After a series of false reports broadcast on Television Belgrade, accusing the Serbian opposition of collaborating with extreme pro-Ustaša and pro-fascist forces in Croatia, a mass protest was scheduled for noon on March 9, 1991, at Republic Square in Belgrade. The main demand was the resignation of the television director Dušan Mitević and four senior editors.
That evening, Slobodan Milošević ordered the Yugoslav People’s Army onto the streets of Belgrade. Tanks appeared in front of the Federal Assembly, at Terazije, Republic Square, and other central locations. This photograph was taken on March 10, 1991, in front of the Presidency building, capturing the moment when military force was openly displayed against civilian unrest.
