Trnopolje – Inside Detention Camp, August 1992

This photograph was taken in August 1992 during an organized visit by journalists to detention camps in Manjača, Omarska, and Trnopolje. The visit was approved by Sonja Karadžić, then Head of the Cabinet of the Ministry of Information of the Republika Srpska. Journalists were transported by bus from one camp to another, in an apparent attempt to demonstrate that detainees were not uniformly emaciated, following the international publication of photographs showing severely malnourished prisoners from Trnopolje.
The image shows a crowded interior space where detainees are gathered with their personal belongings, reflecting the conditions inside the camp at the time. While individual experiences varied, many of the men held in these camps endured severe physical and psychological suffering. This photograph documents the visible reality encountered during that visit, serving as a historical record of the environment and circumstances within the Trnopolje camp.
