Red and Black

In the novel The Red and the Black by the French writer Stendhal, these two colors symbolize two paths to success: red — a military career in Napoleon’s army, and black — a clerical career in the Catholic Church.
Here, however, the symbolism is somewhat different. Red is usually associated with communism, while black is linked with fascism.
During the time of Milošević, the former president of the League of Communists of Serbia, his Socialist Party of Serbia was fervently supported by Šešelj’s Radical Party.
Today, the darkest radicals receive political support from Milošević’s former spokesman Ivica Dačić, together with what remains of the once “red” camp.
Once a red-black coalition. Today a black-red one.
Once a struggle for power. Today a struggle for dinars, euros, dollars… even yen.
But all that has little to do with fashion or architecture. In the world of lines, light and shadow — as can be seen in this photograph — red and black work perfectly together.
Be that as it may, this is another photograph from the series “Belgrade from Above”, entering the short selection for my next photo monograph.

U romanu “Crveno i crno” francuskog pisca Stendala, te dve boje simbolizuju dva puta ka uspehu: crveno — vojničku karijeru u Napoleonovoj vojsci, i crno — svešteničku karijeru u katoličkoj crkvi.
