Product Description
The introduction of international sanctions against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in May 1992 led to a profound economic and social crisis. Hyperinflation, shortages of food, medicine, and basic supplies, along with a dramatic decline in living standards, became part of everyday life for much of the population.
This photograph documents a moment inside a hospital ward, where seriously ill children, affected by chronic shortages of medication and medical equipment, often relied on improvised forms of comfort. Visits by humanitarian workers, artists, and volunteers offered rare moments of relief and distraction from the harsh reality surrounding them.
During this period, images from Yugoslavia circulated worldwide, becoming visual testimony to the impact of political decisions on civilian life. This photograph is part of that documentary record — a personal witness to a time in which the most vulnerable paid the highest price.
