Product Description
The Student Protest of 1992 began in Belgrade in mid-June as a response to the political and social crisis in Serbia. Students of the University of Belgrade, led by the Student Union of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, initiated demonstrations that quickly spread and gained support from students across Serbia. The protest became one of the most visible expressions of dissatisfaction among young people at the time.
During the protest, students articulated demands for democratization, free media, and fair electoral conditions. Most protest activities took place within university premises and their immediate surroundings, with the main gathering point located in front of the Faculty of Philosophy. Students from art academies organized public performances and visual interventions, while Radio Index began broadcasting as the voice of the student movement.
In the early phase of the protests, police presence was limited and largely non-violent. However, when demonstrators attempted to march toward the Dedinje district, police forces were suddenly reinforced, leading to physical confrontations between the police and protesters. This photograph captures that moment — a dense police cordon facing students and citizens amid tension and disorder. The scene remains one of the defining images of the 1992 Student Protest.
