Following the destruction of the bridges over the Danube during the NATO bombing campaign in 1999, river crossings in Novi Sad were carried out by ferries and small boats. These crossings became a temporary but essential form of transportation for the city’s population.
This photograph documents one such crossing, showing the overcrowded conditions under which civilians traveled across the river after the bridges had been destroyed.
