Roof Art: The Measure of Man

At first glance, this photograph looks like a precise drawing made with a ruler and ink. Only after a few moments does it become clear that it is actually a roof — a part of the city we almost never notice from the ground. In the Roof Art series, this hidden layer of architecture transforms into an abstract visual composition.
Roof structures, steel cables, and membranes create a rhythm of lines reminiscent of graphic compositions in modern painting. In these intersecting diagonals one can recognize the spirit of Kazimir Malevich, while the balanced relationships between surfaces and lines evoke the geometric discipline of Piet Mondrian. The repetition of arches and their shadows creates an almost optical play, reminiscent of works by Op Art artists.
At the same time, the structure also speaks the language of contemporary architecture. Its tense and lightweight construction recalls the elegant engineering forms often seen in the projects of Santiago Calatrava, or the transparent structures associated with Norman Foster.
And then, at the very top of the photograph, people and their shadows appear. These small silhouettes become the measure of the entire composition. Without them, everything might look like pure abstraction. With them, this geometry once again becomes part of the living city.

Na prvi pogled ova fotografija deluje kao precizan crtež izveden lenjirom i tušem. Tek posle nekoliko trenutaka postaje jasno da je reč o krovu — delu grada koji sa zemlje gotovo nikada ne primećujemo. U seriji Roof Art upravo taj skriveni sloj arhitekture pretvara se u apstraktnu likovnu kompoziciju.
Krovne konstrukcije, čelične zatege i membrane stvaraju ritam linija koji podseća na grafičke kompozicije savremenog slikarstva. U tim ukrštenim dijagonalama može se prepoznati duh Kazimira Maljeviča, dok pravilni odnosi polja i linija prizivaju geometrijsku disciplinu Pita Mondrijana. Ponavljanje lukova i njihovih senki stvara gotovo optičku igru, nalik radovima umetnika op-arta.
Istovremeno, konstrukcija govori i jezikom savremene arhitekture. Njena napeta struktura podseća na lagane inženjerske forme kakve često srećemo u projektima Santjaga Kalatrave ili u transparentnim konstrukcijama Normana Fostera.
A onda se na samom vrhu fotografije pojavljuju ljudi i njihove senke. Male siluete postaju mera čitave kompozicije. Bez njih, sve bi moglo izgledati kao čista apstrakcija. Sa njima, ova geometrija ponovo postaje deo živog grada.
