Product Description
During the NATO bombing campaign, a series of air strikes were carried out against infrastructure across the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, including bridges, military facilities, and communication hubs. The objective of these operations was to pressure the then Yugoslav president, Slobodan Milošević, to halt the intervention in Kosovo and agree to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
The bridge connecting Smederevo and Kovin was among the targets of NATO air strikes, intended to disrupt communication lines and the transport network of the Yugoslav Army. As a result of the bombing, the bridge sustained significant damage and became unsafe for traffic. Destroyed sections made crossing the Danube difficult and had a negative impact on the daily life of the local population as well as on the regional economy.
The attack provoked strong criticism and condemnation, both from the authorities of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and from parts of the international community, as such civilian infrastructure was regarded as belonging to “protected zones” under international law. The bombing of the bridge between Smederevo and Kovin remains one of the many controversial events of the 1999 conflict in Kosovo.
