At first glance, this image looks like a carefully composed mosaic — a grid of paired blues, rust tones, muted yellows, and soft violets. But it isn’t an artwork. It is a single rooftop in New Belgrade. The moment I saw it from above, I knew I had found a scene that goes far beyond documentary photography. Each panel behaves like an independent canvas: some marked by time and oxidation, others illuminated by reflections of the sky, and a few shimmering with shapes that resemble abstract expressionist brushstrokes.
I can’t say with certainty how this palette was created — whether it’s the combination of different materials, protective coatings, layers of glass, or simply the quiet work of weather over many years. But that mystery is precisely what makes this roof one of the most intriguing discoveries within my Roof Art project.
Through the semi-transparent surfaces, faint silhouettes of furniture and room interiors appear — subtle traces of life unfolding beneath an almost perfectly abstract geometry. That fleeting moment when reality and abstraction overlap is exactly what draws me to photograph the city from above and what continues to shape my monograph “Belgrade from Above.”
This rooftop isn’t just architecture. It is a spontaneous painting created without an artist — a hidden canvas that reveals itself only from the air. And that, in essence, is what Roof Art is all about.

Na prvi pogled deluje kao mozaik — serija pažljivo naslaganih ploča u nijansama plave, zagasito žute, ljubičaste i smeđe. Ali nije u pitanju umetnička kompozicija, već jedan jedini krov na Novom Beogradu. Kada sam ga tokom leta uočio iz vazduha, odmah sam znao da je predamnom prizor koji prevazilazi samu dokumentarnu fotografiju. Svaka ploča deluje kao zasebno platno: negde je trag vremena ostavio patinu, negde je refleksija neba ofarbala površinu u čisto plavetnilo, a ponegde se pojavljuju zagonetne mrlje koje podsećaju na ekspresionističke poteze četkice.
Nisam siguran kako je nastala ovakva paleta — da li je reč o kombinaciji različitih materijala, stakla, zaštitnih folija i oksidacije, ili je vreme jednostavno odradilo ono što ni jedan slikar ne bi umeo da isplanira. Ali upravo ta misterioznost čini ovaj krov jednim od najneobičnijih prizora koje sam zabeležio u projektu Roof Art.
Kroz poluprozirne površine tu i tamo se naziru obrisi stolova, pregrada i predmeta: kratki, diskretni dokazi ljudskog života koji se odvija ispod savršeno apstraktne geometrije. Taj trenutak kada se realnost i apstrakcija dodirnu — kada grad na trenutak liči na galeriju savremene umetnosti — upravo je ono što “Beograd iz vazduha” čini neiscrpnom pričom.
Ovaj krov nije samo arhitektura. On je spontana slika grada, nastala bez autora, a pronađena tek iz ptičije perspektive. Upravo zato serija Roof Art postoji: da otkrije skrivena platna koja leže iznad naših glava i čekaju da budu primećena.
