Product Description
On a clear May day in 1993, my colleague Imre Sabo (Imre Szabó) and I were moving through the war-affected area around Žepa. By rare chance, it was one of the few days without gunfire. We climbed a hill above the town, from where a wide view of the valley opened below. I asked the soldiers where the famous Andrić’s Bridge on the Žepa River was located. While explaining that it could not be seen from that position, one exceptionally agile fighter suddenly arched his body and, fully equipped for combat, performed a gymnastic bridge, shouting: “Here is the bridge ABOVE Žepa!”
At that moment, his commanding officer arrived. He was visibly angry and demanded our documents. Upon seeing that my colleague’s name was Imre Sabo (Imre Szabó), he drew his pistol and pressed the barrel to Imre’s temple, ordering us to leave immediately. His hand was shaking as he shouted the command. We did not wait for a second warning. We got into the Yugo car we had arrived in. Since Imre could not control his shaking knees, I took the wheel and drove us away.
