Product Description
In all parts of Sarajevo — both those under the control of Alija Izetbegović and those held by the forces of Ratko Mladić — funerals took place almost daily in 1993. Flowers were no longer bought in flower shops; for a funeral bouquet, it was enough to pick a few flowers from a garden.
While photographing this woman on her way to the cemetery, I tried to capture both the consequence and the cause of death within a single frame. Just as Jan van Eyck painted his own reflection in the mirror in The Arnolfini Portrait, I caught my own reflection in the shattered glass — a quiet trace of the author’s presence.
